Louise Charlier (1996) is a Belgian artist and researcher. After graduating with a master’s degree from the ENSAV La Cambre drawing workshop in 2019, she continued her artistic and theoretical research on the imagination of the cosmos. In 2022, Louise Charlier was awarded a research grant from the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS-FRESH) and began a PhD in art and art sciences (ULB – La Cambre). Her installations attempt to rethink the links between Earth and space through the creation of speculative futuristic narratives.
Since 2022, she has been collaborating with several scientific research groups, including the European Space Agency and the Department of Physics at the University of Porto. In 2025, Louise Charlier participated in the digital art biennial “En Commun” (Paris) as well as the exhibition “Là où le ciel tremble” at Kommet Lieu d’art Contemporain (Lyon).
STATEMENT
Louise Charlier works on observing space, her place of experimentation and research, between art, science, and storytelling. Interdisciplinarity is an essential component of her work, which takes shape through installations combining sculpture, video, sound, drawing, engraving, and performance.
She has developed Roscosmic, a speculative space agency that she embodies in turn as director, astronaut, and weather presenter. Unlike agencies focused on conquering the cosmos, Roscosmic takes the opposite perspective: that of terrestrial exploration, attentive to the narratives we construct from the planet itself. By adopting the codes of scientific institutions—investigation protocols, observation devices, archiving programs—the artist creates a deliberately ambiguous body of work that blurs the distinction between reality and fiction while questioning these dominant imaginaries, the veracity of their representations of the sky, and their impact on our societies.
Louise Charlier’s installations are fictional enclaves within objective reality that invite viewers to “build hope on the edge of the abyss” by immersing themselves in other possible worlds.
